This is to bring sanity into the sector, ahead of the implementation of the Multilateral Mining Integrated Project in 2018, and help restore the quality of water bodies in the country. The President, Nana Akufo Addo says he will not relent in his fight against Galamsey. In an interaction with the media on his first six months in office at the Flagstaff House in Accra, the President said even if he will use all government machinery to tackle the menace for sanity to prevail he is ready to do so. He reminded the media that his government is not against mining but illegal mining since it is degradable to the environment.
Government has introduced a five year Multilateral Mining Integrated Project aimed at tackling illegal mining in Ghana. Under the project, illegal miners affected by the ban on galamsey will benefit from an alternative livelihood programme that includes tree planting and refilling. But are the illegal miners ready to take up these jobs offered by government.
The Vice President, Mr John Mahama, has re-emphasised the government's avowed concern about the incessant illegal mining, popularly referred to as galamsey and its related menace on the environment. He said the practice also poses a challenge to legally-acquired mining concessions. Mr Mahama was speaking at the inauguration of the Edikan Mine, operated by Perseus Mining Ghana Limited at Denkyira Ayanfuri in Upper Denkyira West district of the Central Region.
The Campaign against illegal mining is yielding some positive results, as the quality of some water bodies have improved. The turbidity of water at the Kyebi intake site where the Ghana Water Company Limited draws its water for treatment has dropped from 3,900 to 1,200 showing a decrease of 69.2%. This follows the drastic decline in the activities of illegal miners in the area. The East Akyem Municipal Manager of the Ghana Water Company Limited, Mr. Honoree Ametepe said this when he visited the place to ascertain the current state of the river.
