The President, Nana Akufo-Addo says he is not against mining activities in general as being speculated but rather illegal mining. According to him, mining especially along water bodies should not continue since it adversely affects human survival. The President was speaking at Soabe in the Eastern Region when he inaugurated an ICT Centre.
The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Mr. John Peter Amewu, has called on the Military High Command to, as a matter of urgency, investigate the circumstances leading to the deployment of military personel to protect Geo Professional Services, GPS, a mining company at Ntontoh, in the Ashanti region. The company, which is manned by Russians and Ukrainians, has defied the temporal ban issued by the government on all illegal and small scale mining across the country.

The Campaign against illegal mining is yielding some positive results, as the quality of some water bodies have improved. The turbidity of water at the Kyebi intake site where the Ghana Water Company Limited draws its water for treatment has dropped from 3,900 to 1,200 showing a decrease of 69.2%. This follows the drastic decline in the activities of illegal miners in the area. The East Akyem Municipal Manager of the Ghana Water Company Limited, Mr. Honoree Ametepe said this when he visited the place to ascertain the current state of the river.
The President, Nana Akufo Addo says he will not relent in his fight against Galamsey. In an interaction with the media on his first six months in office at the Flagstaff House in Accra, the President said even if he will use all government machinery to tackle the menace for sanity to prevail he is ready to do so. He reminded the media that his government is not against mining but illegal mining since it is degradable to the environment.
The Vice President, Mr John Mahama, has re-emphasised the government's avowed concern about the incessant illegal mining, popularly referred to as galamsey and its related menace on the environment. He said the practice also poses a challenge to legally-acquired mining concessions.
